These finding aids have been structured using Encoded Archival Description (EAD). EAD, an SGML document type definition, is standard for presenting archival finding aids on the World Wide Web. The standard is maintained in the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress, in partnership with the Society of American Archivists.

The Folger Library has begun providing HTML versions of all electronic finding aids. These HTML documents are best viewed using Microsoft Internet Explorer ver. 5 or above (internal document links are currently inactive in Netscape Navigator ver. 4 and below). In the meantime, if you wish to view the SGML versions (which have a slightly different format, but the same content), you will need an SGML-capable browser. Panorama Free 1.11, compatible with Windows 3.1, 95, and 98, can be downloaded here. A full-feature version of this viewer (version 2) is available for purchase here.

New electronic finding aids will be added on a regular basis.
