Mr. and Mrs. Folger purchased the Henderson collection on March 19, 1900 from the American Art Galleries, lot 2652 entitled Play-Bills, Etc. A Library of Old Play-Bills, etc. (Collected by William Henderson), as part of the sale of Augustin Daly's letters and papers.

William Henderson (1831-1891) was born August 5, 1831 in Biggar, Lanarkshire. He began as a compositor with T & A Constable in Edinburgh, and later served as a type music printer with Novello, Ewer & Co., London. In 1861, he partnered with James Cossar Rait and Mantague Spalding as type music printers. The firm of Henderson, Rait, and Spalding was widely known and well respected. Henderson died May 30, 1891 in Ipswich.
The manuscripts in the Henderson scrapbook collection include 657 autograph letters of authors, poets, artists, composers, vocalists, and actors such as Clara Schumann, Mark Twain, Sir Walter Scott, Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sir William Gilbert, and John Ruskin. These are divided into 4 categories:
Manuscripts in Music Scrapbooks contains autograph letters, signatures, music fragments, and other miscellaneous documents. Several autograph items by Sir Arthur Sullivan are here, including a letter (Mus 1:77a) and a fragment of a song (Mus 1:116e). Mus 2:33a-b gives news of the first volume of the "Purcell Society."
Manuscripts in Scotch Scrapbooks contains comments written on playbills and an autograph letter from John Barnett. Sc 6:42 includes the facsimile signature of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.
Manuscripts in Shakespeare Scrapbooks contains miscellaneous notes and an autograph letter from John Denham(?).
Manuscripts in Waverley Scrapbooks contains autograph letters, notes, postcards, signatures, and other miscellaneous documents. Notable items include letters by Samuel Clemens (W 2:46b), Sir William Gilbert (W 2:45a), and Sir Arthur Sullivan (W 2:45b).
The Henderson collection consists of 70 unbound folio volumes divided into 4 series: music, Scotch, Shakespeare, and Waverley. Volumes are numbered sequentially within each series. Only 19 of these volumes contain manuscripts. Items are identified by series, volume number, leaf, and an additional identifier if necessary.

W 2:9a. Draft statement recounting an incident in the life of a Miss Burns (d. 1791), “kept by the late Harry Guthrie,” ca. 1836.
She arrived in Edinburgh from England in 1789. A complaint was brought against her for “Indecencies practised by her admirers close to the windows of her bedroom.” William Creech, the magistrate at the time “pronounced what was considered, under all the circum- stances of the case, a very harsh sentence against her” which stirred some controversy and “was immediately advocated to the Supreme Court-- The Honb. Henry Erskine was her Councel”. Also,“during the dependence of this suit, Burns, the poet, wrote an inimitable letter to the present Mr. Peter Hill, inquiring the fate of the cause of his namesake.” Burns, William Nicol, and Allen Masterton after Miss Burns' death in 1791 made a wager as to which of them could write the best epitaph. Nicol won--“the epitath W 2:9a. was inimitably clever; but it is also quite (cont.) unfit for publication” and Miss Burns' stone bears only “her name and the date of her death.”
There is a Burns poem entitled “Lines Written Under the Picture of the Celebrated Miss Burns.”
