| Abstract: | A collection of letters and papers (n.d., 1849-1916) of Augustin Daly (1838-1899) arising mainly out of his management of the two successive Fifth Avenue Theatres (1869-1877), the Grand Opera House (1872-1874), and Daly’s Theatre (1879-1899), all in New York City. The majority of the letters are addressed to Daly. Letters in German are described in greater detail in the Guide to Letters and Papers by German Authors. |
The Daly papers were acquired by Henry Folger at various sales in the early twentieth century.
Portions of this collection have been microfilmed. Contact the curator of manuscripts for details.

These papers arose out of Daly’s various theatrical enterprises. In New York he was manager of the successive Fifth Avenue Theatres, 1869-1877, of the Grand Opera House, 1872-1874, and of Daly’s Theatre, 1879-1899; in London he was lessor of the Lyceum Theatre from Sir Henry Irving, 1890-1891, and manager of Daly’s Theatre, 1893-1899. His company toured America and later Europe regularly. Some years are more fully documented than others. The papers include Daly’s agreements to sell his theatrical costumes to Fanny Davenport, 1877 (170-172), papers arising out of the performance of Pique (adapted from Mrs Lean’s novel, Feb.1884), (224), the agreement between Tennyson and Daly about the performance of The Foresters, January 25, 1892, (258), a translation of Sarah Bernhardt’s agreement with M.L.Mayer, Paris, Sep. 22, 1894, (267), and a memorandum of October 10, 1893 stating that Mr Gordon Craig may have to play at short notice, (2099).
