Folger-specific note
Folger copy 57 is nominally of the first issue, as formulated by William B. Todd, "Issues and states of the Second Folio and Milton's epitaph on Shakespeare," Studies in bibliography, v. 5 (1952-53), p. 81-108. However, the issue cannot be definitively determined. This copy wants [superscript pi]A2 (title leaf) but contains [superscript pi]A5 ("Effigies" leaf) proper to the first issue (in state Ib). Wants port. (on title page). Also wants [superscript pi]A1,3. Leaves [superscript pi]A4,5,6 are misbound in reverse order. Also wants *1,2. Leaves *3,4 are misbound in reverse order. Leaf *3 is mutilated at the head, affecting the headpiece. Wants all but a stub of G2. Wants M1. Wants 3c3-end (including the colophon). Imperfections affect text slightly on d6 and very slightly on V3, d5, e6, f1, i4, and l2,3. Inscribed "Mary Elmer her book given by Mr. Thorold" (18th-cent.), 2i5 verso, and "John Thorold" (18th-cent.), 3a6 verso. Other manuscript additions include Mary Elmer's comments on Antony (2y5 verso and 2y6 recto). Bookplate of Sir Richard Paul Jodrell, Bart. Book label (woodcut) with monogram "E.H."
