Folger copy: early manuscript notes and numerous "Nota" markings, trefoil signs, brackets, and manicules; book and chapter numbers repeated by hand in margins; errors in printed headlines corrected by hand; manuscript additions of chapters omitted in sixth book in table of contents. Early autograph on verso of last leaf "Edow[ar]d[us] Athtle[?]"; seventeenth century autograph on recto of first leaf "Sr. Thomas Tempest Baronet"; "No. 141" handwritten in brown ink on same leaf, corrected to "No. 87"; bookplate of W.T. Smedley; purchased in 1924. Contemporary blind tooled binding, with circular stamps with symbols of the four Evangelists in lozenges of central panels (stamps with symbols of John and Matthew are smaller); remains of 2 clasps catching on back cover; evidence of a chain at head of front cover; spine bears later gold tooled decoration and a paper label with pencilled shelfmark "M6"; fore-edge inscription "Valeri[us]" reading from top to bottom; another inscription of author name and title on lower edge, reading from fore-edge to spine.
