Folger-specific note
Initials and paragraph marks rubricated in red with occasional notes in same paint; large initial on leaf [B]2r rubricated in red with red and blue infill; capital strokes in register. Manuscript notes and manicules in brown ink; manuscript numbering of quires (?) on tail of the verso of the last leaf of gatherings [O] and [c]. Inscription at head of leaf [A]2r: Langheim a ̊1641 (i.e. the Cistercian abbey at Langheim). In a 15th cent. alum tawed calf binding on wooden boards with 2 metal clasps (1 has remains only), woven endbands, and showing evidence of a chain attachment on top of back cover; blind tooling on boards is typical of the Nuremberg style binding (central panel of front cover shows floral pattern with stems of ornamental foliage and ragged staff, rosettes, fleur-de-lys and dragon stamps; the lower panel shows lozenge compartments in central panel with same stamps as on front cover); manuscript fragments used as paste-down endpapers have been removed from the inside of the boards, showing the remaining offset from the ink; another manuscript fragment was used as spine lining. Evidence of several spine labels; the upper one, handwritten on paper, is fragmented, revealing handwritten shelfmark on spine; also evidence of a metal framed title plaque over a horn plate on front cover. Leather tab on the 1st leaf of each book. Rebacked; in a tailored box. Bookplate of W.T. Smedley. Purchased in 1924.
