Scope and content
Consists of draft letter intended to be copied by Vanlore, and sent from Vanlore to Sir Adrian Thibaut, Vanlore's brother-in-law, in Amsterdam. The letter concerns investments relating to Raleigh's final expedition to Guiana in search of gold, to be agreed upon with Raleigh's deputy Mr. Henry Hovenar. Also includes, in another hand signed by Martin Basill, "This letter was shewn unto Mathias Penewart, at the tyme of his examination, on the part and behalf of Sir Peter Van Lore, knt, deft., against Dame Elizabeth Raleigh, widow, comp[lainan]et, 12 Junnii, 1623."
Note
Raleigh's directions to Mr. Vanlore and his signature have been cut away and went missing between 1736 (when they were printed in Raleigh's History of the World, which includes the "Life of the Author" by William Oldys) and 1939 (when it was purchased by du Pont shortly after being displayed at the World's Fair): "This is the letter which I desire you to write to your brother in Amsterdam; and for any assurance you shall give, I will again put you in sureties to save you harmless. W. Ralegh."
