Plate made for 1807 facsimile edition of the first First Folio. Some impressions are on paper specially made for the facsimile (wove paper, with a dated J. Whatman watermark saying "Shakespeare"; watermark dates of 1806 and 1807 are known). Other impressions are on antique paper, presumably intended to deceive.
Printed on antique laid paper of poor quality (e.g. several vatman's tears including one on sitter's cheek) with vertical chain lines. Postcard of Droeshout portrait (NPG 185) taped to frame verso removed to curatorial file. Removed from ca. 1950s frame. Photocopies kept in curatorial file. Given in memory of Katherine and Sebastian Gaeta by Lois Avery Gaeta and the Hon. Sebastian Gaeta, Jr.
