Note
Versions: In 1818 Cawse exhibited this same scene at the Society of Painters in Water Colours (no. 134). The catalogue entry reads, "Sir John Falstaff examining his Recruits / Falstaff. What trade art thou? Feeble. A Woman's tailor, sir. / Second Part of King Henry the Fourth." Another version, closest to the Yale version (B1975.5.22), was sold at Sotheby, London, 16 May 1984, lot 212, repr., incorrectly identified as "Pistol announcing to Sir John Falstaff the Death of King Henry IV." It was signed and dated 1819 and measured 24 by 29 1/2 inches.

Source of acquisition
E. Parsons & Sons, Fine Art Dealers in Books, Prints and Paintings, 45 Brompton Rd., London SW3 [1927]; Fine Art Book and Print Sellers and Picture Dealers [1926 and 1929]; Fine Art Book and Print Sellers and Dealers in Pictures and Original Drawings by the Old Masters [1929], January 1930, £31.10.0, as a scene from The Merry Wives of Windsor. (This misidentification may have been deliberate, since Parsons had already sold a painting by Cawse of this subject to Folger. An old photograph with this identification can be found in ART File S528klb, no. 57.)
