Note
Versions: Garlick offers a summary of hte important versions: "Farington records, 12 March 1801, that Lawrence was painting the large figure of Hamlet 'from a small study'. This was probably the 'small version' lent by Sir Thomas Baring to the British Institution exhibition of 1830 (no. 33) and which belonged to the Earl of Northbrook in 1910. There are other recorded versions. Those which have the best claim to be autograph or studio are probably that which descended from Fanny Kemble to C. K. B. Wistar, Haverford, Pa., size unrecorded, and a head-and-shoulders, 30 x 25 (76.2 x 63.5), now privately owned, which was presented by Lawrence to Miss Harriet Lee." The Folger deaccessioned another reduced copy acquired from the Leverhulme sale; see D37.
