The picture for which this is a study is listed in the Royal Academy catalogue for 1816 as no. 199: "Miss O'Neill in the character of Juliet. Scene, a Garden (Juliet appears above in the balcony). 'See how she leans her cheek upon her hand, etc.'" There is a photograph of the painting, which could be the original, on file at the Witt Library, London, where it is listed as in a private collection in Wales.
