Studio of Sir Joshua Reynolds.
Original painting: Commissioned by Alderman Boydell and exhibited in 1789 at the opening of his Shakespeare Gallery (no. 23). Acquired by the Earl of Egremont in 1805, this painting (93 x 56 in.) is still at Petworth.
Engravings after original: Caroline Watson, 25 March 1790 (first state) and 1 August 1792, 19 7/8 x 15 3/8 in., for Boydell's large series of prints (the demon behind the Cardinal's pillow has been removed in this second state); Andrew Grey, 4 June 1801, 10 5/8 x 6 9/16 in. (image and margin), for Boydell's small series.
