Signed and dated at lower left in red, the letters slanting at the same angle as the floor: "G. H. Hall/ N.Y. '54". In brown ink on the back of the canvas at top (presumably copies an inscription seen on the original canvas before it was relined): "Sir Toby Belch / And because thou art virtuous / Shall be no more cakes and ale? / Geo. H. Hall / New York / 1854".
