Summary
Mistress Quickly admonishes Sir John Falstaff before the Chief Justicve, "And didst thou not kiss me and bid me fetch thee thirty shillings? I put thee now to thy book-oath. Deny it, if thou canst." Dever shows the moment she is describing, one that is not enacted on the stage. Mistress Quickly dips into her purse as Falstaff successfully cajoles her into giving him the money. The setting is the Boar's Head Tavern in Eastcheap. Later in the scene Mistress Quickly laments that she will have to pawn her plate and the tapestry on the wall in the dining room if Falstaff does not pay. Dever includes these details along with Falstaff's buckler and sword, since he has just returned from battle. Two onlookers peek around the tapestry to laugh at his cunning in convincing Mistress Quickly to advance him money. The two principal figures, however are sympathetically portrayed, Dever obviously delighting in the opportunity of depicting period dress. The paint is thinly applied, particularly in the background passages. Artists such as Sir William Orchardson had already popularized this combination of fully developed figures against a sketchy background.

Monogram on stool at lower right: Large "A" over small "D" (obviously intended to resmble the monogram of Albrecht Dürer)
