Summary
The central scene depicts the kneeling Claudius praying before a crucifix as he asks God for forgiveness for his crime against his brother, whom he had secretly killed in order to obtain his wife and his throne.
Note
Signed and dated at lower left: "A Christie 1842" (the "C" is superimposed over the "A"). Lettering in Gothic style beneath crucifix at right: "Deus Ultionum."
