Note
Written in black ink at upper left on the back of the canvas used in relining the original (presumably repeats earlier inscription that was covered over): "Sir John Falstaff. / Choosing his Recruits / Henry the 4th / -Shakespeare-."
Versions: In 1818 Cawse exhibited this same scene at the Society of Painters in Water Colours (no. 134). The catalogue entry reads, "Sir John Falstaff examining his Recruits / Falstaff. What trade art thou? Feeble. A Woman's tailor, sir. / Second Part of King Henry the Fourth." Another version, closest to the Yale version (B1975.5.22), was sold at Sotheby, London, 16 May 1984, lot 212, repr., incorrectly identified as "Pistol announcing to Sir John Falstaff the Deat of King Henry IV." It was signed and dated 1819 and measured 24 by 29 1/2 inches.
