Folger-specific note
Folger copy 8 wants the title leaf ([superscript pi]A2) and the "verses" leaf with port. ([superscript pi]A1) and all else through D4 (prelims., Temp., Two Gent., and the beginning of Merry Wives). Also wants 3O5, 4D5, and b1 through end. Leaves 3D4 and 3E2 are supplied from another copy. Leaves a1-6 (beginning of Pericles) are misbound at the front of the book. Mutilated at front and rear, with many leaves patched, inlaid, and backed with glassine paper. Throughout, the outer corners of most leaves and many edges are feathered and torn. Mutilations affect text on D4, F1, Q4, S6, 3D1, 4D2-4,6, 4E1,2,4, and a1-6. Other imperfections affect text on 3H5, 3S5, 4C6, slightly on V1, 2G1, 2L6, 2Q1, 3B2, 3O2, 4D1, and very slightly on 13 other leaves (list on file). Variant states and printings, as recorded by James G. McManaway, "New discoveries in the Third Folio," PBSA, v. 70, (1976), 469-80, and other such variations, are identified in file. Inscribed "John Barnes His Book 1762" on Z6 verso and "Henry Fletcher but not is [sic] book" (17th-cent.) on 3A6 verso. Bookplate of J. W. Jaggard. Inserted is a facsim. of William Marshall's port. of Shakespeare in his Poems (1640) that corresponds to the front. in Alfred Russell Smith's facsim. of the Poems (1885).
